Food and Wine in the Capitol NeighborhoodOur evening food tour covers the Capitol Hill Neighborhood down to the Jewish Ghetto and Campo de' Fiori. Along with the Pantheon area and the Palatine, this quarter is Rome's oldest. It is also the most densely packes with cultural and culinary treasures.
The walk continues to the Jewish Ghetto, the Theatre of Marcellus, the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Area of Piazza Argentina and Piazza Farnese. As it is true of most of antique Rome, the only way to explore the Campo de' Fiori-Ghetto-Capitoline area is on foot. Not many visitors realize that in the cellar of Antico Forno Roscioli lie remnants of the Theatre of Pompey, where Julius Caesar was murdered. The subterranean dining areas of several nearby restaurants are claimed to be the very spot upon which Brutus wielded his dagger.
In fact many of the family-run businesses dotted around the neighborhood have been around for a century or more, and some are into their third, fourth or fifthe generations. The tour begins in Piazza Venezia in front of the Vittoriano, the grandest marble monument of Italy. Then, you will reach Capitol Hill, which traditionally marks the city center of Rome with the Statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and the town hall.
Medieval relics are too numerous to mention, while Renaissance and Baroque periods have littered it with mementos, some food-related.
